Why You Can’t Achieve a 99 ATAR (Yet): The Valley of Disappointment

Sounds Familiar?

Have you ever studied to the point where you feel like your head is about to explode? 🤯

You walk into the exam hall, pen in hand, mentally repeating formulas, hoping they stick. You turn the first page, and BOOM—your mind goes blank.

Three weeks later, as the teacher hands back your test, your heart races. Then you see your mark… 47%.

All those hours of study, and yet, you’re stuck in the same ditch you desperately tried to escape. Sweaty, suffocated, and stuck. Sound familiar?

You, my friend, are in the Valley of Disappointment.

The Deep Dark Valley

We often assume that effort and results are directly proportional—that the harder we work, the immediate our rewards will be. But reality doesn’t work that way.

Our results lag behind our efforts, creating a frustrating gap between:

🔵 What we think should happen – Immediate progress, visible improvements
🔴 What actually happens – Slow gains, seemingly no change

We often assume that effort and results are directly proportional—that the harder we work, the immediate our rewards will be. But reality doesn’t work that way.

Most people give up too soon, quitting before they reach the point where experience compounds and results start to snowball.

We see this in every aspect of life:

  • You exercise for a week and expect to lose weight immediately.
  • You sleep early for one night and expect your messed-up sleep schedule to be fixed.
  • You study for 10 hours and expect to see a 10% increase in your grades

It doesn’t work like that. Not even close.

At the start, the rewards of effort are minimal, especially if you’re inexperienced.

  • You don’t yet know the best workouts for your body.
  • Your body hasn’t adjusted to your new sleep routine.
  • And there is NO WAY you’ve mastered the best study techniques in just a few sessions.

This is why progress feels painfully slow at first—but if you stick with it, results will come.

Overcoming the Valley of Disappointment

The key to escaping the valley is to reach equilibrium. This is the point where the reward for our efforts is somewhat equal.

This is that ‘AHA’ moment, when something starts to ‘click’ In our heads.

How to Overcome the Valley of Disappointment

1)Don’t Give Up

Cliché? Maybe. True? 100%.

Most students quit before they give themselves enough time to see progress. Improvement isn’t instant—it’s earned through repeated effort.

2)Shift Your Mindset

Stop measuring success by immediate results. Instead, track effort and consistency. Every study session adds up, even if you don’t see it yet.

3)Be Strategic About Progress

Ask yourself: What’s working? What isn’t? Small tweaks lead to big improvements over time.
Can’t remember formulas? Try flashcards.
Struggling with essays? Practice structuring answers before writing full ones.

5)Remember: The HSC is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Cramming doesn’t work. Consistent habits do. Stop expecting overnight miracles and start playing the long game.

4)Buddy Up & Stay Accountable

You’re not alone. We like to think we’re special, and that our struggles our unique, they aren’t.
Every student has faced this struggle. Find a study partner, set shared goals, and push each other forward.

And if you don’t have friends… well, go make some. 😉

For those of you who have read Atomic habits before, I’m sure all of this was a good reminder for those who haven’t (Firstly, GO AND READ IT), but this was just my take on one of the concepts in his book. So obviously big credit goes to James Clear for the inspo.
